The Beinecke Library by Gordon Bunshaft in Connecticut is the quintessential box in a box example; in its basic form, it is quite literally a box in a box. This project attempts to break the literality of the Beinecke by stretching and compressing the exterior figure in a way that starts to inform the inner figure. By stretching and compressing the outer figure the inner figure then begins to appear as if it is floating within the outer figure.
Additionally, the Prada Aoyama by Herzog and de Meuron in Japan exposes the connections of the inner figures to the outer sack. Opposite Herzog and de Meuron’s project, I seek to strategically hide the connections between the inner and outer figure to emphasize the inner figures ability to float within the inner void.
